A key component of this project is to develop educational materials based on study findings to provide back to farms. We have created three main tools that farms may use to improve safety on their operation: a series of 12 graphic, bilingual safety illustrations (may be used in booklet or poster format); a series of 10 research briefs communicating study findings; and a promising health and safety practices report detailing practices that farms employed to improve worker safety and well-being.

Safety on the Farm: A Bilingual Guide in Images for the Thoroughbred Worker

In collaboration with a core working group of Thoroughbred industry representatives and feedback from dozens more, we created a series of 12 bilingual, graphic safety illustrations to help farms find a common language of safety. This document (available here) may be printed as a booklet to keep in the tack room or to distribute to new hires. In addition, the individual illustrations may be printed, laminated and hung in barns as a reference and reminder of how to be safe on the Thoroughbred farm.

From the Field: Promising Health and Safety Practices on Thoroughbred Farms

We conducted in-depth interviews with 26 Thoroughbred farm management representatives about practices they employed to help workers stay healthy, safe, and engaged. We asked specifically about how farms managed a diverse, multilingual workforce. In order to help farms learn from one another, we have highlighted promising practices described by participating farms in this report.
